Wellbeing and mindfulness are words many of us hear on a weekly basis, and Covid has brought the importance of mental health and wellbeing to the forefront as we don’t have the same physical network as we used to. But is it just a trend or is it here to stay?
How do you look after your wellbeing? What does mindfulness mean to you? I was inspired by a recent
Team NLP Membership session where a colleague talked about finding time in our lives for our Headspace and Heartspace. This means much more to me than wellbeing and mindfulness - terms, which perhaps have become popular hashtags we no longer relate to in a real way.
I started thinking about my headspace - if I’m very busy and I start to feel stressed, my head feels a bit fuzzy and mentally things blur. To me, having headspace means that I have order in my head and enough space for all the things I need to remember. I imagine my mind is a bookcase, and all the things I have going on are stacked on the shelves.
When I have enough headspace the shelves are tidy and there’s room for more things. Sometimes the things end up on the wrong shelves - taking a walk in the park on my own or simply staring out of the window into the distance helps me to clear up the bookcase, often subconsciously.
Heartspace is about being kind to myself and others. I’m my own worst critic, and I’ve recently learnt that this is not serving me in any way. I’m still very passionate about doing the best job I can, in whatever context, but I’ve dialled down my own expectations.
And my mantra is - there is no failure, only feedback. Believing that those around me do the best they can, with the resources they have available.
