Shine the light on what’s right, for You

Maria Hicks

What is more important to you - what you can do? Or what you can’t?

Shifting your mindset and your thinking will dramatically impact your emotional state, what action you take and therefore your success. You can make yourself feel better or worse. You are the ONLY person who can control your emotions, which drive actions, which bring results.

Measure by your own yardstick

When I say Success and Results, of course this is individual to you and your context. It may mean getting a promotion or saving up money for a holiday. Success is different for every person dispensing on your values, your circumstances and your aspirations.

Some people are driven by money and the income they make. Others focus on time and work/life balance as their driver. Some want minimum stress while others crave more responsibility. One thing I have learnt in adulthood - comparing never leads to anything positive and can actually allow other people to drive our behavior. Is that OK with you?

Model your heroes

It can be helpful and inspiring to have a role model, someone you admire for their achievements, their strengths, values and success. To understand how they work, what they think, how they deal with setbacks; ask to interview them, or if you are unable to get time with them, do some research about their life.

Changes are, it may seem like success has come easy for them, but underneath there will be a tonne of learnings, tenacity, challenges and routines along the way. How did they deal with that? What did they think and do? And if this feels right to you, you can implement your version to achieve your goals.

Know what success is for You

I once had a leader in a large insurance company who admired me for being brave enough to stick to my values of wanting to work part-time. At my interview I was very clear - I can do this job and I will be great at it. But part of hiring Maria is accepting that I will not work full time. And I got the job - a few years later my leader told me she admired me for that.

Being clear about what You want, what Your values are, can You compromise on anything? Will all help you identify your path, be it career or your personal life choices.

Get focused

When I work with a client who want help to identify their goals, values and what success I ask them to do the following:

  • Do your positives - write down what went well today, do this every day
  • Accept compliments - if someone pays you a compliment, decide to accept it and hold it in you
  • In your life and career, what did you do when you felt the most happy, satisfied and fulfilled - this will help you identify your values
  • When you have a clearer idea of your value, ask yourself - could I live without this in my life? This will give you an idea of any compromises you may be willing to make
  • Work with a Coach - it’s absolutely possible to work this stuff out yourself. It’s easier with a Coach; someone who believes in your ability, helps you remove limiting beliefs that stand in your way, provides a guiding process around your thought process
